Manufacturing of Silicon Carbide

Dependable Service & On Time Deliveries

Supplying Industry Demands with our Superior Products & Processing Standards

Silicon Carbide Producer

South Africa’s first silicon carbide (SiC) manufacturer, Sublime Technologies, is a leading provider that specialises in reliable supply and consistent production quality. Sublime Technologies produces two grades of silicon carbide: crude crystalline silicon carbide and metallurgical-grade silicon carbide.

With various industrial applications, SiC is a versatile and safe substance that offers endurance, good heat-resistance and heat-conductibility.

We Produce the Following Silicon Carbide Products:

Abrasives

Metallurgical

Refractory

Properties of Silicon Carbide:

  • High-hardness
  • High-thermal Consistency
  • Very Good Resistance at High Temperatures
  • Low Thermal Expansion
  • Electrical Conductivity
  • Acts as a Semiconductor
  • Nonlinear Electrical Resistance
  • Acts as Alloying Additive

About Us

Sublime’s origins were founded through Pyromet Technologies (now Tenova Pyromet), an organisation specialising in smelting technology innovation, and a major supplier to the South African and international metal processing industry. Established in 2001 Sublime Technologies produces Silicon Carbide using state-of-the-art Acheson Electric furnaces.

The privately-owned and controlled company is part of the Curimbaba Group, it has grown in twelve short years to a capacity of over 50,000 tons per annum of various product grades manufactured from furnaces currently totalling 40 Megawatt. The production facility is situated adjacent to one of South Africa’s clean coal-fired power stations with ample room for further expansion, unlimited by space, raw materials or energy.

Our Values

Consistent product quality and reliable supply are key values at Sublime. We are ISO 9001 (2008) certified and utilise best practice systems and processes that are employed at all levels throughout the company. This results in our established reputation for upholding values that are recognised by local and export markets, including Europe, the USA, the Middle and Far East and Australasia among others.

Long-term partnerships with key customers have played a leading role in Sublime’s continued strength and stability.

Although a relatively young company, re-investment in the business focuses on continually improved and increased capacity in downstream processing of products to meet a widening diversity in demand for silicon carbide products.

Our Vision

To be recognised as a high standard and reliable Silicon Carbide producer in the markets of activity.

Sublime Technologies Products

Abrasives

Sublime is currently supplying in the bonded and polishing market according to FEPA standards. Hard and sharp silicon carbide is one of the first choices raw material for bonded, coated and granular abrasive applications, including wire sawing, abrasive blasting and etching, grinding wheels, cutting, sandpaper and abrasive blasting.

Its high resistance to wear also makes Silicon Carbide an ideal material for manufacturing abrasive resistant pipe, impellers, pumping chambers and other high wear parts. Its wear resistance (abrasiveness) is 5-20 times than that of cast iron and rubber.

Sizes offered F12-F180 and F220

In accordance with FEPA standards

Metallurgical

Silicon carbide is used for the de-oxidation and re-carburation of cast iron and steel in foundries. Metallurgical grade Silicon Carbide grain is a unique material for use in the production of iron and steel. It is used in the foundry industry for electric furnace production of gray, ductile, and malleable iron. We are proud to supply our products to Europe and Germany.

It is an excellent source of carbon and silicon, promoting nucleation and rendering the iron more responsive to inoculation, deoxidising the iron, which enhances furnace lining life.

Sublime offers four standard Grade products:

Premium-grade Metallurgical >97% SiC (Crystalline)

High-grade Metallurgical 88 – 92% SiC (Carbosil)

Medium Grade Metallurgical 82 – 88% SiC (SubSiC85)

As with higher grade materials, SubSiC85 is also used as a deoxidising agent in LD/BOF/ladle furnaces. More recent applications for SubSiC include the patented Maxred process developed in South Africa for the Ferro Alloys industry.

Low-grade Metallurgical 30 – 40% SiC (SubSiC35)

88-92% Carbosil (0-10mm, 1-10mm) and 82-88% SiC85 (0-10mm, 0.5-10mm and 1-10mm)

We also have lower grade metallurgical – SiC35 with typical above 353% SiC (0-10mm and 10-50mm)

Refractory

Because of its high-temperature and abrasive resistance, it is used to make refractories for furnaces and other high-temperature components. The ceramic industry is one of the largest users of Silicon Carbide refractory products supplied by Sublime with reliable and consistent quality. We supply to the local market, the US and Brazil.

Sublime’s premium grade product (>97% SiC) is used predominantly for refractory applications where high-tolerance is required.

Premium-grade Refractory >97% SiC

We offer mm sizes and slit sizes – customised to customers needs.
